Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between May 22 and Sunday. Three the drivers were involved with traffic crashes and two of the drivers were younger than age 21.

Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between May 22 and Sunday. Three the drivers were involved with traffic crashes and two of the drivers were younger than age 21.

South Hilo officers arrested seven motorists while Kona officers arrested four and Puna officers three, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Officer in South Kohala also arrested two motorists while Ka’u officers arrested one.

So far this year, there have been 492 DUI arrests compared with 456 during the same period last year.

There have been 579 major crashes so far this year compared with 614 during the same period last year.

To date there have been 18 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island public roads compared with 10 during the same period last year.
